Ear candles are hollow tubes approximately 20–30 cm long, made of woven cotton or linen fabric infused with various essences. During the burning of an ear candle, three phases are distinguished: During the first phase, a slight vacuum is created and the column of air inside the ear candle begins to vibrate. This is said to gently massage the eardrum. As the treatment progresses into the so-called warmth phase, a pleasant sensation of warmth develops in the ear. Blood circulation and the body’s natural defenses are stimulated. During the third phase, known as the chimney phase, positive pressure forms in the ear: blocked pores open, skin respiration is improved, and waste products and secretions are drawn into the inside of the candle. Throughout all three phases, the pressure balance within the head is also believed to be regulated, which may help improve coordination between the two hemispheres of the brain. The treatment is then complemented with a relaxing head and neck massage.
