Ohrkerzen sind etwa 20 bis 30 cm lange hohle Röhrchen aus gewebtem Baumwoll- oder Leinenstoff, der mit verschiedenen Essenzen getränkt wird. Beim Abbrennen einer Ohrkerze werden drei Phasen unterschieden: Während der ersten Phase entsteht ein Unterdruck und die Luftsäule im Innern der Ohrkerze beginnt zu vibrieren. Dadurch wird das Trommelfell massiert. Im weiteren Verlauf, während der sogenannten Wärmephase, kommt es zu einer angenehmen Wärmeempfindung im Ohr. Die Durchblutung und die körpereigene Abwehr werden angeregt. Während der dritten Phase, der Kaminphase, bildet sich ein Überdruck im Ohr: Verstopfte Poren öffnen sich, die Hautatmung wird verbessert und Abfallstoffe und Sekrete werden in das Innere der Kerze abtransportiert. In allen drei Phasen werden auch die Druckverhältnisse im Kopf reguliert, was zu einer besseren Koordination der beiden Gehirnhälften führen soll. Danach wird die Behandlung mit einer entspannenden Kopf und Nackenmassage erweitert.
